Why the Maine climate makes this a real decision

Out here between Bethel and Bridgton, a deck takes a beating that a deck in a milder state never sees. We get hard freeze-thaw cycles all winter, where water soaks into a board, freezes, expands, and works the wood loose a little at a time. We get heavy snow load sitting on the framing for months. We get strong summer sun, mud season swings in humidity, and around Long Lake, Highland Lake, and the camps near Sebago, a lot of standing moisture in the air.

How wood holds up here

How composite holds up here

Composite and the newer capped-PVC boards are built to shrug off exactly the things that wear wood out here.
